PISCO Scientists have recently collaborated with NOAA’s Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary to release an informal, informational booklet that presents results from California’s Marine Life Protection Act (MLPA) baseline kelp forest monitoring surveys in the central coast study region (CCSR). The booklet titled “Monitoring MPAs by SCUBA in waters off Central California” presents pictographic representations of data gathered in 2007 and 2008 as part of kelp forest baseline monitoring in MLPA state marine protected areas.
This booklet is part of a major effort by PISCO to make the discoveries and innovations of the MLPA research readily available and is presented as a complement to independently led booklets that have been created for the same purpose; other products include web-accessible data archives and summaries, exhibits and videos.
This booklet was created by the Partnership for Interdisciplinary Studies of Coastal Oceans (PISCO) in collaboration with NOAA’s Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary (MBNMS), the Monterey Bay Sanctuary Foundation (MBSF), and the California Sea Grant program. Support for the baseline monitoring in the CCSR was provided by the California Ocean Protection Council administered by California Sea Grant and UC Santa Cruz. Future efforts to lead development of sustainable, informative, and innovative monitoring of California’s MPA network will be conducted by the Marine Protected Area Monitoring Enterprise.
