Hypoxia affects Fish!

New findings about how marine resources are affected in Oregon’s Dead Zone

PISCO collaborative, ecosystem-based research connects interdisciplinary scientific findings with policy applications. Over the coming decades, global climate change will have profound impacts on marine ecosystems worldwide. Changing wind and weather patterns will alter ocean conditions and may cause hypoxic dead zones in some of the ocean’s most productive areas.

Monitoring MPAs by SCUBA in waters off Central California

"In conjunction with ocean observations, continued monitoring of ecosystems can reveal the drivers of ecosystem change, particularly as they influence ecosystem productivity, function, resiliency and services. When combined with socioeconomic monitoring studies, ecological monitoring can identify how ecosystem effects from MPAs are both caused by and influence changes in human-use patterns.

PISCO Hypoxia Research Video

PISCO hypoxia Scientists and Policy and Outreach coordinators, at Oregon State University have recently created a short video that describes what is known about hypoxia off the coast of Oregon. On display at the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History, the film answers the question; How did the dead zones in the ocean off Oregon form?
