Dr. Steve Gaines provides guidance for the Science of Marine Reserves Team as a convening lead author of the 2002 version of The Science of Marine Reserves and all subsequent resources developed from this large-scale synthesis. Steve has a special interest in making scientific information more accessible in web-based formats, and through work with Google and other web partners, has provided leadership in tailoring science for the web. Steve has led the way in scientific studies of marine conservation, biogeography, effects of climate change on coastal ecosystems, effects of ocean circulation on dispersal, and sustainable fisheries. He is the director of the Marine Science Institute at University of California, Santa Barbara, where he oversees UCSB studies of coastal ecosystems in southern and central California and around the world.
